ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., Episode 7

The cat is out of the bag. Even though the big reveal itself wasn’t much of a shocker, all the little interactions leading up to it provided excellent buildup for the episode’s climax, carefully adding bits and pieces from the perspectives of different players, creating tension and urgency despite Jean’s own non-reaction. Princess Schnee (who might be the one dancing in the ED) escaped her royal bird cage by faking her death, so that she could run away with a… Continue Reading →

ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., Episode 6

In a show that draws all of its suspense from the uncertainty of who knows what and shares what with whom to what purpose, one thing’s becoming very clear: Jean and Lotta’s royal heritage. Given the German naming scheme, it’s likely to be on their mother’s side. This is further substantiated by Prince Schwan’s insistence on entering the royal gallery to hang his portrait (next to the picture of a woman whose face gets deliberately withheld from the camera), the… Continue Reading →

ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., Episode 5

ACCA has been called slow, and while the show is still far from having one plot point chase the next, it’s so rich in interesting themes and interactions that I find myself on the edge of my seat listening to Jean’s preferences (or lack thereof) in bread, especially since we can now confidently identify these as code for much bigger things to come. It’s the small, subtle things that made episode 5 such a delight to watch. With all the… Continue Reading →

ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., Episode 4

As we accompany Jean on yet another inspection, it’s finally time for the much-discussed coup d’état to rear its head in the form of a local, small-scale uprising in the district of Suitsu. Between rural Fāmasu, supersized Jumōku, royal Dōwā, and the administrative center of Bādō, we’ve already seen quite a bit of variety in this so-called federation. Suitsu is different, and not just because everything and everyone in it seems to be named after food and beverages. Time stands… Continue Reading →

ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., Episode 3

ACCA‘s world might appear painfully peaceful, but in between eating cake and doing boring paperwork, the coat of bureaucracy has been eroded by a false sense of security from years of immobility. Hidden under the surface, individual hot spots have grown to full-scale volcanoes, boiling with conflicting agendas and ready to erupt at a moment’s notice. The signal seems to be the crown prince’s coming of age ceremony, creating a rift in the kingdom’s power balance which has to be… Continue Reading →
