Musing about Storytelling in Anime

Perfect Anime Endings (2/2)

Part 2 of my list of perfect anime endings. (Read part 1 here.) 5. Legend of the Galactic Heroes (OVA): The Legend Ends, and History Begins Building up a perfect ending over the course of twenty-something episodes requires considerable talent and effort. Delivering such an ending after 110 episodes, which aired over the course of just a little under 10 years, is something else entirely. Yoshiki Tanaka and Noburo Ishiguro’s monumental epos succeeds at doing just that. Legend of the… Continue Reading →

Perfect Anime Endings (1/2)

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, Episode 9

From the first episode, Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju has been a strong show in terms of narrative, characterization, sound design, and visual storytelling. Me watching this show We continue were we left things last week, backstage right after the performance of Benten Kozo. While Bon is busy removing his makeup, we witness… Continue Reading →

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, Episode 5

A lot of important things happened this week in Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, even if, at the beginning of episode five, not much seems to have changed since we left our characters last Friday. Bon and Shin-san are still living together as roommates, with clearly divided roles and responsibilities. While Shin-san is enjoying the bohemian lifestyle of a poor but going-to-hit-it-big artist (“You can’t go anywhere in rakugo without visiting the red-light districts”), Bon gets to worry for the both… Continue Reading →
